Elderly Man Killed Walking on Freeway
SAN CLEMENTE — An 85-year-old man from South Laguna was killed Tuesday when he walked into traffic on Interstate 5 and was hit by a truck, police said.
A California Highway Patrol representative said James O’Neil Huffman parked his white Ford Granada on the right shoulder of the freeway’s northbound lanes, then stepped into traffic near the Avenida Pico off-ramp just after 4 p.m.
Police said a tractor-trailer rig’s driver swerved to miss Huffman in the right lane, but he was fatally struck by the trailer.
The incident was still under investigation Tuesday evening. The CHP said officers do not know why Huffman walked into traffic or whether Huffman’s car had broken down.
No citation was issued to the truck driver.
