VENTURA : School Board to Name 2 Principals

Ventura Unified School District board members will vote Tuesday on hiring two new principals who will take over next school year at Buena and Ventura high schools.
The new administrators will follow Robert Cousar at Ventura High and Michael Shanahan at Buena High. Earlier this year, both announced their resignations to receive higher retirement benefits before possible salary cuts go into effect.
The board has considered salary cuts as part of $3.2 million in reductions needed to balance its $54.6-million budget next year.
The board will vote Tuesday on its final budget.
The finalists for the principals’ positions were selected from a field of candidates culled both from within the district and from responses to advertisements placed in national education publications, Assistant Supt. Richard Averett said.
A panel at each school interviewed the candidates and helped narrow the field, Averett said. Each panel consisted of three teachers, two parents, two middle school principals, two administrators and two principals from outside the district, he said.
Supt. Cesare Caldarelli also interviewed the finalists and made the recommendations upon which the board will vote, Averett said.
The finalists will be named at Tuesday’s meeting.
