Dogs from the Border Patrol’s canine unit sniffed out heroin valued at $226,800 in the trunk of a car at the San Onofre checkpoint, authorities said Friday.
Border Patrol agents confiscated 3 pounds of high-grade tar heroin from a 1980 Ford Thunderbird, an agency spokeswoman said. The occupants of the car, Jose Gonzales-Fernandez, 29, and Francisco Maldonado-Gudino, 19, both Mexican citizens and legal residents of the United States, were arrested and turned over to the North County Drug Task Force for investigation and prosecution, she said.
