Fountain Valley High School had its fourth on-campus grad night June 12, and sponsors said it was a resounding success. Parent Carol Armour, who with Jenny Kinkaid served as a co-chairwoman of the Mardi Gras party, estimated that 85% of the senior class attended.
Pam and Wayne Via, who were in charge of the decorations, helped to create a Mississippi riverboat, Southern mansion and the New Orleans French Quarter in the high school gymnasium. There, the graduating students were entertained by a band, disc jockey, carnival games, magician, hypnotist and casino-style gambling--when they weren’t eating.
Elsewhere in the county, of the 72 public and private high schools, 47 offered their own versions of grad night--some on campus, some off--in an effort to provide graduates with an evening of celebration and to keep them away from drugs and alcohol.
