When Bren returned to his office Tuesday after shelling out a quarter of a billion dollars to Smith and her mother, Athalie R. Clarke, his secretary asked him how it went. Turning his pockets inside out, Bren, a billionaire, admitted: “I’m a little bit lighter.”
