Water Level on Rise; So Are the Prospects

The strong runoff from the southern end of the Sierra has not only improved the whitewater rafting in the Kern Valley but the fishing, as well. Lake Isabella is well up, filling coves that had been dry before the March precipitation.

Steve Connelly, of Wofford Heights, on the Kern River recently landed a 12-pound 4-ounce, 26 1/2-inch largemouth bass while fishing from the lakeshore with an inflated nightcrawler and six-pound test line. Previously, the spot where Connelly fished would have been hundreds of yards from the water.

The lake is expected to remain at its peak for the next few weeks before being drawn down again.
