Underground Paper

Please help me extend my thanks to Gompers Secondary School Vice Principal Eloise Aitken for her treatment of Benjamen Hanes and his newsletter (“Underground Paper Gets Gompers Pupil in Hot Water,” June 11.)
Your story quoted Aitken as saying “it is not in my nature to be punitive.” I am delighted that she was able to rise above her nature. We must all do what we can to maintain the system’s integrity in the face of such subversive concepts as social conscience and independent thought.
Actions like Aitken’s reassure me that we are giving San Diego’s children all the skills required to survive in the 17th Century.
