U.N. Sanctions Against Iraq

During the Persian Gulf crisis, the U.N. Security Council imposed these economic sanctions against Iraq:
Resolution 661, passed four days after Iraq invaded Kuwait, imposed a trade and financial embargo against Iraq. The U.N. Sanctions Committee agreed this week to allow countries holding frozen Iraqi assets to release them, if Iraq could prove that they would go toward humanitarian purposes.
Resolution 665 gave U.S. and other naval powers the right to enforce the economic embargo.
Resolution 666 allowed shipments of aid to relieve human suffering in Kuwait and Iraq. The Security Council subsequently passed a resolution stressing that only the Sanctions Committee may authorize the food, medicine and other humanitarian aid shipments.
Resolution 670 expanded the economic embargo to include all air cargo in or out of Iraq and Kuwait, except humanitarian aid approved by the Sanctions Committee.
Resolution 674 held Baghdad liable for all war damages and economic losses.
