World IN BRIEF : MIDEAST : ’88 Pan Am Bombing Blamed on Libyans

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A retired CIA expert says investigators believe Iran enlisted Libyan agents to bomb Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in December, 1988. Vincent Cannistraro, formerly of the CIA’s counterterrorism center, said probers have cleared Syria of involvement in the bombing, which killed 270 people. Cannistraro said investigators also determined that Libyan agents were responsible for the 1989 bombing of UTA Flight 772, which killed 170 people over Niger.
