United Asks Boeing to Consider 650-Seat Jet: The airline said it asked the plane maker to study building a jet with nearly double the passenger capacity of today’s largest commercial plane. The jet would be ideal for long-haul travel, a lucrative area where carriers are jockeying for dominance. It would be especially important in the race to capture a big share of the international market, which is expected to grow 10% a year in the 1990s. A high-capacity, long-range jet also would help United with airport slot constraints. The new airplane would probably be delivered in 1997 or 1998 if Boeing agrees to make it.
