Getty’s Globe Offer: American billionaire Gordon Getty has offered to donate $1.7 million to help rebuild Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London if Britain raises $13.6 million first, it was announced Tuesday. Getty challenged the British government and people to make a substantial contribution to the Shakespeare Globe Trust’s 8 Million Pound Appeal to reconstruct the world-renowned theater built in 1598 and destroyed in 1644. “Getty feels that it is essentially a British project,” said actor Sam Wanamaker, founder of the Globe project. “Although international in terms of objectives, he feels the British are not doing enough.” Wanamaker said Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have all contributed to the Globe project and Indonesia has donated a large amount of timber with more expected from Sweden and Canada, but there was not enough support coming from Britain itself.
