Contractually committed to avoid each other until a July 1 race in Lille, France, Carl Lewis and Ben Johnson lost in separate 100-meter races at Seville, Spain.
In the faster of the two races, Lewis crossed the finish line in 10.30 seconds to finish second behind 1988 U.S. Olympian Dennis Mitchell, who was timed in 10.15.
Lewis’ Santa Monica Track Club teammate, Mark Witherspoon, won the other 100-meter race in 10.37. Johnson, running his second outdoor race since completing a two-year suspension for failing a steroid test at the 1988 Olympic Games, was fifth in 10.69.
