PLACENTIA : What’s in a Name? Ask Not in Placentia

For the second time in as many months, the Placentia Unified School District board has rejected a proposal to change the name of the district.

Trustees voted unanimously against changing the name to the Placentia Area Unified School District. With the word area in the name, supporters said, it would encompass all of the cities served by the district. The district serves all of Placentia and Yorba Linda and parts of Anaheim, Brea and Fullerton.

Several proposals to change the district’s name have come before the board since 1989, when the Yorba Linda and Placentia school districts merged. So far, all attempts to change the name have been unsuccessful, either because of opposition to the suggestion or the costs involved in changing the name.

In April, board members rejected a proposal to change the name to the Placentia Linda Unified School District.

School officials estimate that it will initially cost about $8,000 to change the name, including repainting buses. Other changes, such as new letterhead and business cards, could be made as supplies run out or when money becomes available.

Board members will vote again June 11 on another proposal to change the name to Placentia/Yorba Linda Unified School District.
