A Snow Job Helps CS Long Beach Overpower No. 5 Texas, 17-10

From Staff and Wire Reports

Coach Dave Snow convinced his players they could beat fifth-ranked Texas Sunday if they weren’t intimidated by the crowd of 7,100, and Cal State Long Beach responded with a 17-10 victory to take command in the NCAA Central Regional.

“If one word would dictate if we won this game it would be poise ,” Snow said. “We had to take it inning by inning and not get shaken up if they scored a few runs against us early.”

Instead, Long Beach (43-19) jumped ahead, 3-0, when Jason Giambi hit a two-run homer off Scott Harrison (10-1) in the first inning. The 49ers built at 9-4 lead, but Texas (48-17) got close with three runs off Andy Croghan (9-2) in the seventh. Long Beach settled matters with seven runs in the eighth, when Giambi hit a two-run single and Brent Cookson tripled home two more.

The 49ers will pitch Steve Whitaker (10-3, 2.48 earned-run average) in today’s championship round. They must be beaten twice to be denied a trip to the College World Series.

Texas (48-17) was to play Oklahoma State (45-19), which beat Alabama-Birmingham, 8-7, later Sunday.
