WASHINGTON — Orders for American-made machine tools in April fell for the second straight month, buffeted by a weak domestic market, the Assn. for Manufacturing Technology said in a report released Sunday.
Machine tool orders, an indicator of economic health, dropped 32.7% to $194.65 million in April from $289.25 million a year earlier, and dipped 5.3% from March’s $205.45 million, the association said in its monthly report.
February set a 1991 high of $245.15 million.
Machine tools, which cut or shape metal, are used to make goods ranging from cookware to complex weaponry.
