SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS : Intentional Walk Helps Send Burbank Packing, 8-7

Burbank High’s delightfully improbable season came to an end Tuesday when Darren Brink hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Edison High an 8-7 victory over the Bulldogs in a second-round Southern Section 5-A Division baseball game at Edison.
After Darren Weaver doubled to start Edison’s ninth, Burbank Coach Dave Johnson elected to intentionally walk Matt Harrell and pitch to Brink, who batted .453 during the season. Brink hit Jason Chandler’s second pitch into right field, scoring Harrell.
“I was surprised they decided to pitch to me, but I was glad they did. (Chandler) gave me the fastball I was looking for,” Brink said.
Burbank, the Foothill League champion, finished 17-6.
The Chargers (15-12) took a 6-4 lead after three innings but Burbank came back with three runs in the fourth to make it 7-6.
Relief pitcher Shawn Allbee (6-4) shut down the Bulldogs, however, striking out eight and limiting Burbank to one hit the rest of the way. Edison, third-place finisher in the Sunset League, tied the score, 7-7, in the sixth inning on two hits.
