Jelen Beats Agassi in 1st Round

The Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome lost two of its top players Tuesday in Rome when unseeded Eric Jelen of Germany stunned second-seeded Andre Agassi of Las Vegas, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), in the first round, and top-seeded Boris Becker of Germany withdrew because of back pains.

Third-seeded Pete Sampras of Rancho Palos Verdes held off Soviet qualifier Vladimir Gabrichidze, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Trisha Laux of USC was upset by Paloma Collantes of Mississippi, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, in the third round of the NCAA women’s tennis tournament at Stanford. Stephanie London, the only other Trojan in the 64-player singles draw, lost to Tonya Fuller of the University of San Diego, 1-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in the second round.
