SCENE ON THE STREET : The Hole Story

By Eastern standards, it’s hardly the San Gable Valley.
After all, the great tall gables of the East were a function of the climate. The steeply pitched roofs could shrug off the snow, and the ample attics insulated against winter’s blast.
We lean toward the laid back out here; our gables are minimal, as befits a people who would rather pitch a screenplay than a roof.
You think of gable, out here in the sun, and you think of Clark.
Yet there are some charmers here and there, such as these in Claremont and South Pasadena.
Most are a functional part of the architecture, but some are merely for fun, a roguish accent circonflexe (as in the French word cote ) above a door or window.
