HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Saints’ Inzunzas Combine to Beat Clairemont
Jorge Inzunza got his ninth victory in 10 decisions, his little brother Marco Inzunza got his fourth save, and St. Augustine got its second consecutive City Harbor League baseball title as the Saints defeated Clairemont, 6-5, Monday at Hickman Field.
The Saints improved to 17-8, 9-2 and clinched the league title with one game remaining. Christian (9-8, 7-4), a 2-0 winner over Coronado, is in second.
The Saints led, 5-0, after four innings, but Clairemont (11-11-1, 5-6) rallied for two in the fifth. After Saints scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, Clairemont came back again with three in the seventh.
Craig Goodwin’s two-run home run summoned Saints Coach Mike Stephensen, and junior Marco Inzunza replaced senior Jorge Inzunza. Marco got the next two batters and the save.
Roger Alvarez and John Mozerko each went two for four with two RBIs for St. Augustine.
City Central League
Madison 30, Lincoln 4--Madison (12-9, 9-2) scored the fifth highest run total in section history with four home runs against Lincoln (5-15, 2-9).
Mike Jones was four for six with five RBIs, Jerry Jones (no relation) was three for five with five RBIs and Brad Tade three for three with four RBIs.
Mike Jones had a three-run homer in the fourth, Jerry Jones a three-run homer in the seventh, Tade a three-run homer in the seventh and Matt Campbell a two-run homer in the seventh.
San Diego 7, Hoover 6--Hoover was getting ready to celebrate its sixth consecutive victory when San Diego scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to lock up second place.
Dwight Hancock (three for four, three RBIs) drove in the winning run with one out.
Carlos Rivera doubled to lead off the seventh. After an out, Gino Arreola, Jaque Jones, Josh Hoffman (two RBIs), James Dean and Hancock had consecutive singles for the Cavers (16-8-1, 7-4). Hoover, which trails third-place Crawford by a half-game, finished 6-16, 5-7.
City Eastern League
Mira Mesa 10, Morse 6--Mira Mesa (23-4-1, 10-1) clinched the league title outright as Brendan Hause went three for three with a two-run home run and two doubles. Hause also pitched the seventh inning in relief of Mike Bovee, who improved to 8-2 with three innings’ work.
Jarrett Loggins was two for two with a double and a run scored for Morse (6-15, 2-9).
Point Loma 3, Serra 1--Ray Plummer (4-4) pitched a two-hitter for Point Loma (13-13, 6-5). Serra ended its league season at 2-10 (14-14-1 overall).
City Western League
USDHS 3, University City 1--USDHS (17-9, 8-3) moved into a first-place tie with Mission Bay (18-7, 8-3) by knocking University City (16-8, 8-4) out of first. USDHS will play Mission Bay at USD on Wednesday for the league championship.
Rob Floco (5-3) was the winner, allowing six hits and one unearned run. Mike Saipe (8-2) was the loser, allowing five hits and one earned run.
USDHS’ Jeff Moore had the game’s lone RBI.
Mission Bay 9, Kearny 7--Mission Bay forced a showdown with USDHS as J.J. Ibarra and Jason Enomoto each went two for three. In middle relief, Josh Rees (3-2) was the winner, and Bob Wazilewski earned his first save. Kearny is 4-18-1, 1-10.
Metro Conference
Chula Vista 2, Castle Park 1--In a makeup game because of a rainout, Cesar Martinez (7-1) pitched a three-hitter and David Romero scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh as Chula Vista (14-10, 9-4) took sole possession of second. Castle Park (17-8, 8-5) fell to third. Both teams have one game remaining.
Romero (two for four) led off seventh with a double, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on throwing error by pitcher Vico Moreno (5-4). Tony Casazza was three for three for Chula Vista.
Nonleague
West Hills 6, Crawford 4--Jason Vesco led off the game with an inside-the-park home run to center field for West Hills (6-13-1). Teammate Harry Caldwell (3-3) pitched a five-hitter and struck out 12. Crawford is 7-15.
