Darryl Strawberry intentionally skipped scheduled batting practice Saturday for the first time this season and skipped it again Sunday with most of the other players because it was not mandatory.

Strawberry said he does not plan to take batting practice for “four or five days†in hopes of ending a five-for-39 (.128) slump that has dropped his average to .216.

“I just have to get away from it,†Strawberry said.

Brett Butler’s 16-game hitting streak, the longest in the National League this season, ended when he went hitless in four at-bats with a walk. . . . Adhering to doctors orders, Kal Daniels stayed away from Dodger Stadium for a third consecutive day with flu. . . . There are persistent rumors that Fernando Valenzuela will sign with the pitching-poor San Francisco Giants. But agent Tony DeMarco, who recently contacted the Giants, said they have yet to discuss a contract.
