California IN BRIEF : STANFORD : $924,517 Refund Sent to Government

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Stanford University officials sent the federal government a $924,517 refund check, representing repayment for controversial items such as antiques for the school’s presidential residence and a trustee’s retreat that were partly billed to taxpayers as research-related. The repayment, however, is only a small part of the final cost at Stanford of a national crackdown on billings for the indirect costs of research, including maintenance and utilities. Two weeks ago, federal authorities sharply cut Stanford’s reimbursement rate for those costs and the result may be a $23-million drop in government support at the school.
