HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hoover Routs League Rival Lincoln, 29-0

Has Ted Williams re-enrolled at Hoover? Did Cardinal Coach Chuck Giles sell his soul to the devil?

Hoover, which until last week had won only one baseball game all season, on Monday won its third City Central League game in a row.

The score this time: Hoover 29, Lincoln 0.

“It kind of went our way today,” Giles understated. “We are on an incredible roll.”

There were plenty of stars. The brightest: Tony Banks collected four hits and six RBIs; Levi McLaurin had four hits and five RBIs; and catcher Roger Blake had two hits and five RBIs, including a three-run homer. The Cardinals (4-15, 3-6) had 20 hits and 15 walks. Winner Byron Limbrick (2-0) threw a five-hitter.

Hoover’s 29 runs were the eighth-highest in section history. Christian holds the record of 48 against La Jolla Country Day in 1977. Mt. Carmel scored 37 in 1984 and Borrego Springs 36 in the same season. Mission Bay had 33 in 1983 and three teams were tied with 30.

Lincoln (5-13, 2-7) had been struggling since getting off to a good start, and it didn’t help matters when the Hornets lost a couple of key players last week because of grades.

In another City Central game:

San Diego 3, Crawford 2--In relief, Frank Guzman had two stints on the mound and won for the sixth time in seven decisions. After being replaced by Jacque Jones in the sixth, Guzman, who came in in the second, returned in the seventh to shut down the Colts (8-14, 4-5).

Jones, a sophomore, knocked in the game-winning RBI with a triple for the Cavers (15-7-1, 6-3). Troy Wagnon was two for three with an RBI for Crawford.

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 2, Christian 1--In a game for first place, Jorge Inzunza (8-1) scattered five hits and struck out 11 as the defending league champion Saints (15-8, 7-2) edged Christian (8-7, 6-3).

Aaron Goncalves drove in Inzunza, who had singled, with a triple in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie. Goncalves then scored on a perfect squeeze bunt single by Justin Williams.

Coronado 4, Marian 3--Losing pitcher Gil Sigala (3-3) had a no-hitter going into the sixth before Josh Prueher homered to give Coronado a 3-2 lead. The Islanders (8-9-1, 5-4) added another run in the top of the seventh, offsetting the solo homer by Marian’s Bill Brown in the bottom of the seventh. Marian is 7-13-1, 1-8.

City Eastern League

Patrick Henry 10, Point Loma 4--Patrick Henry (8-10, 6-3) scored nine runs in the second inning, getting eight hits and sending 14 batters to the plate.

In the second, Tony Davis (three for four) had two hits and three RBIs, Dennis Twombley (three for four) had two hits and scored twice. Point Loma is 12-12, 5-4.

Morse 5, Serra 4--Carlos Carrillo singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Wayne Brown with the winning run. Brown had singled with two outs and stolen second. Winner Chris Nelson (3-4) went the distance and struck out 11 for Morse (6-13, 2-7). Serra, which scored four in the top of the seventh, fell to 14-11-1, 2-7.

City Western League

University City 3, La Jolla 1--Ben Mohr hit a two-run shot in the sixth that broke a 1-1 tie to give University City (15-5, 7-2) sole possession of first place.

John Jennings and Bryan Hidalgo each had two hits for La Jolla (11-9, 2-7).
