John Vargas scored with 10 seconds left in the third overtime to give Newport Beach an 11-10 victory over Harvard Foundation of Studio City in the final of the U.S. Water Polo Men’s Outdoor National Championships at Cal State Long Beach Sunday.
Newport, 6-0 in the tournament, had a six-on-five advantage when Vargas took a pass on the left side from Craig Klass and beat goalie Dan Hacket.
Harvard, which won 23 consecutive national tournament games over four years, had a 7-5 lead late in the fourth period but two goals by Charlie Harris sent the game into overtime, which consists of sets of two three-minute halves.
A penalty shot by Newport’s Mike Evans tied the score, 9-9, in the second overtime.
Oliver Will, one of the few players in the game not on the U.S. national team, gave Newport a 10-9 lead in the third overtime.
Harvard tied it a final time, 10-10, on a backhanded shot from the hole by Alex Rousseau.
Two-meter men Terry Schroeder of Harvard, who has played in three Olympics, and Jeff Campbell of Newport were named the tournament’s most valuable players.
