IRS Lottery

Now that the feeding frenzy over the largest lottery jackpot ever in California history has blown over, can we now talk really big money? Why not an annual IRS lottery? Collection is simple: Check a box on your federal income tax return and add $1, $10 or whatever to participate. You must pay by April 15, however, to be eligible or forfeit your contribution--sorry, no refunds. The federal government could then distribute the surplus (after the winning Social Security number has been selected) to those federal causes we are asked to support.
Please don’t think I am advocating a national lottery on a regular basis. I just thought the interest of an annual national lottery would perk up those April blues.
