Bethlehem Steel Corp.: The company reported a first-quarter loss of $39.2 million on sales of $1.1 billion, compared to net income of $21.3 million on sales of $1.2 billion for the year-ago period. The Bethlehem, Pa.-based company said higher operating costs, the recession’s effect on prices and a 7% slump in steel shipments were responsible for the loss.
