Rosa Mota of Portugal won the London Marathon in 2 hours 26 minutes 14 seconds, with Francie Larrieu Smith finishing second, 1:21 behind the winner.
Mota’s time was the second fastest this year. Only Poland’s Wanda Panfil, who ran 2:24:15 at last week’s Boston Marathon, has run faster.
Yakov Tolstikov of the Soviet Union won the men’s division in 2:09:17. Olympic gold medalist and European champion Gelindo Bordin dropped out four miles from the finish because of leg pain.
