Fetal Tissue Controversy

Dr. Healy’s about-face on the issue of fetal tissue research ignores the concept of scientific honesty. Scientific thinking draws conclusions based on evidence. There is ample evidence that fetal tissue research is of benefit in a variety of diseases, enough evidence to warrant vigorous research on its use. There is absolutely no evidence that use of aborted fetal tissue for research or treatment has any influence on the decision to have an abortion. It is no more immoral or unethical to use aborted fetal tissue than it is to use cadaver kidneys for transplants.

The argument that moral or ethical issues are involved is specious and is usually presented by zealots who defy logic to forward their own peculiar points of view. I am saddened that Dr. Healy chose to set aside scientific considerations for political ones. She is obviously an otherwise well-qualified candidate for the NIH director’s position.
