A 22-year-old Montrose man shot himself to death while sitting in his car in a student parking lot near Crescenta Valley High School.
David Dediego had been trying to reconcile with his 17-year-old former girlfriend, a senior at the school, said Deputy Jerry Carrigan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Dediego handed a suicide note to the young woman before shooting himself in the upper torso with a small-caliber rifle, Carrigan said. The student was not identified.
Principal Ken Biermann said students had just been released from school when the 3 p.m. shooting took place in a student lot at Ramsdell Avenue and Mary Street, a block north of the campus.
No students reported witnessing the shooting, but a crowd gathered at the scene minutes later. Dediego was not a resident of the immediate area and had not attended school there.
