TENNIS ROUNDUP : Third-Seeded Sanchez Gets Surprised by Jarryd, 6-2, 6-2

Anders Jarryd of Sweden upset third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-2, Wednesday night in the second round of the ABN Amro Indoor tournament at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In other second-round matches, Christian Bergstrom beat fellow Swede Magnus Larsson, 6-2, 7-5, Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia overcame Javier Sanchez of Spain, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, seventh-seeded Jacob Hlasek of Switzerland defeated Ctislav Dosedel of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-4.

In first-round matches, top-seeded Ivan Lendl trounced Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-1, and Jan Siemerink beat fellow Dutchman Mark Koevermans, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

MaliVai Washington knocked off third-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the second-seeded Rich Reneberg advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over David Pate.

In another match, second-seeded Rich Reneberg advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over David Pate.

Washington, a former University of Michigan star, recorded nine aces in the 86-minute match, serving up to 120 m.p.h., according to courtside radar machines.

In the first set, Washington broke Korda in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead and held on to win the set with a hard passing shot in the backhand court.

In the second set, Korda broke Washington in the second game, but was broken back in game seven. Washington was down, 0-30, in the 12th game but rallied to hold serve.

In the tiebreaker, Washington overcame a 4-1 deficit. Korda lost the match when he double faulted.

Reneberg, coming off a rotator cuff injury sustained last November, broke Pate in game two of the first set, but failed to hold serve in the fifth game.

Reneberg won the first set, breaking Pate in the eighth game and holding serve in game nine.

In the second set, Pate lost his serve in the seventh game, but broke back in the next one. In the 12-point tiebreaker, Reneberg took a 4-0 lead and Pate couldn’t catch up.
