OXNARD : Brawl Breaks Out in High School Gym
Police were summoned to Oxnard High School on Wednesday after a fight between two students in the gymnasium escalated into a brawl involving about 15 students, school officials said.
The fight occurred during the lunch break, which some students were allowed to take in the gym because of the rain, Assistant Supt. Gary Davis said.
Several hundred students were in the gym when the fight began, officials said.
The school’s dean of students called for police reinforcements “to make sure things didn’t get out of control,†Davis said. About 10 officers were called to the scene, police said.
Detective Jim Seitz said the gym was cleared and students were calmed by the time police arrived. One 16-year-old student was arrested and charged with inciting a riot, Seitz said. “He was trying to get something started but wasn’t able to,†Seitz said.
Although there were reports that the fight was racially motivated, police officials said race did not appear to have been a factor.
