WAR IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : House Seeks Reports on U.S. War Costs

The House voted to require the Bush Administration to provide Congress with monthly reports on the costs of the war and on allied contributions to the U.S.-led effort. The measure, approved 393 to 1, was a compromise between the Administration and Democrats who complained that the government has not released enough information about the war’s price tag. The measure now moves to the Senate. President Bush is expected to send legislation to Congress today for spending of $56 billion to pay for the first months of the war, mostly from foreign contributions. Other countries have pledged $51 billion in aid to the United States
