A survey of 1,379 U.S. children between ages 8 and 18 shows that 54% SUPPORT U.S. INVOLVEMENT in the war. However, when asked how they would regard a war with “heavy American deaths and injuries,” the support dropped to 11%. The Harris-Scholastic Youth survey questioned youngsters in grades 3 to 12. The highest support for the war came from students in 9th to 12th grade, with 69% in favor. Overall, 65% of the students said they think the main purpose of the U.S. involvement is “to stop one nation from taking over a neighboring country.” Twenty-two percent said they would support the war if it meant “moderate deaths and injuries” and 34% would support it if there were “few or no deaths and injuries.”
