Intel Develops Faster Chip: Intel Corp. said it has developed a prototype of a microprocessor that is about twice as fast as any other microprocessor on the market. Intel, whose microprocessors act as the “brains” of all International Business Machines Corp. personal computers and compatible models, said the new chip is a souped-up version of its top-of-the-line microprocessor, the 80486. The new version runs at a speed of 100 megahertz, compared to 33 megahertz for the fastest 486 chip on the market. Intel has said it will introduce a 50-megahertz version of the 486 later this year.
