Looking to avenge a 12-point loss earlier in the week at Santa Clara, the University of San Diego women’s basketball team fell short, losing, 61-51, in a West Coast Conference game at USD.
Melissa King, the WCC’s player of the month for January, made all four free throws and a key assist as Santa Clara went on an 8-0 run after USD had pulled within five, 53-48, with 2:08 left. King finished with a game-high 16 points and seven assists.
Chris Enger and Molly Hunter scored 13 apiece for USD, which committed 20 turnovers to just 12 for Santa Clara. Enger added eight rebounds and three blocks.
USD, which had won six in a row before losing to Santa Clara, 95-83, Wednesday, fell to 12-11, 7-3. Santa Clara, which entered the week with as many victories as any other Division I team in the nation, improved to 22-2, 10- 0.
