The Region : Freeway Work Has Started
Work has started on $902,000 worth of landscaping and irrigation improvements along a nine-mile stretch of the San Bernardino Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley.
The major thrust of the job is to upgrade or replace a 28-year-old manual irrigation system with an automated system. It will increase safety on the freeway because Caltrans workers will no longer be required to switch on the water by hand, California Department of Transportation spokesman Russell Snyder said.
The system will be equipped with a “rain switch” to ensure that landscaping is watered only when needed, he said.
Baldwin Park-based Terra-Cal Construction Inc. is scheduled to complete the work within two years.
The project area encompasses 49 acres and crosses Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead and El Monte.
