ALBUM REVIEWS : TANA/REID “Yours and Mine” Concord Jazz *** 1/2
- Share via
This new New York-based band, led by the in-the-pocket rhythm pair of drummer Akira Tana and bassist Rufus Reid, covers a lot of modern jazz territory and with considerable elan. Saxophonists Ralph Moore and Jesse Davis are the shining front line, and pianist Rob Schneiderman, a man with a firm touch and sharp harmonic concepts, completes the team.
The rewarding program includes the pianist’s attractive medium-tempo “Juvenessence,” where Moore’s tenor fluidity and starbright-to-dusk-at-sunset tone stand out; Ellington’s “Warm Valley,” with Davis’ alto basking in the spotlight; and a quicksilver “The Song Is You,” where Moore’s rapid-fire bursts are both clean and musical. A debut with substance.
