LOS ALAMITOS : Final Weekend One for the Books
Apprehend won the $100,000 Horseman’s Quarter Horse Racing Assn. Championship Saturday night at Los Alamitos, 24 hours after his full brother, Griswold, lowered the world record for 870 yards in the $50,000 Bull Rastus Handicap.
Apprehend, ridden by Henry Garcia, covered 440 yards in the stakes record-tying time of 21.40 seconds for a half-length victory over Dashing Val in the last feature of the meet.
Friday, Griswold carried high weight of 125 pounds to a 3 3/4-length Bull Rastus triumph in 43.99 seconds, bettering his world standard of 44.07 seconds. Kip Didericksen rode.
Apprehend and Griswold are both gelded sons of Merridoc-Twist A Fleet and are owned by Pete Parrella and Jerry Moreland’s Legacy Ranch of Chino.
Griswold was named horse of the meet, and Apprehend earned 3-year-old honors.
The 73-night meet concluded with average nightly attendance of 5,602, up 6.1% over corresponding figures last year; and the average nightly handle of $1,086,994 was up 10.5% over last year. On-track alone, attendance figures were 3,637, up 8.8%; and the handle was $651,189, up 1.2%.
Didericksen romped to meet riding honors with 110 victories. Blane Schvaneveldt was the leading trainer with 81 victories.
Harness racing takes over Los Alamitos Friday for a 124-night stand through July 27.
