War IN BRIEF : CALIFORNIA : Soldier Killed in Mock Desert Battle

A soldier based at Ft. Irwin was killed in a mock battle in the Mojave Desert, an Army spokeswoman said. Second Lt. Michael G. Garrett, 24, was pronounced dead at Weed Army Community Hospital. He suffered head and chest injuries when his tank overturned during the exercise, the spokeswoman said. Two other soldiers in the tank were uninjured, she said. The accident was under investigation. Garrett, a platoon leader from Hemphill, Tex., was assigned to the 177th Armored Brigade.
