Sexism and the Careers of Actress Kathy Bates and Comedian Diane Ford

Kathy Bates, thank you. You speak for all of us--all of us “pretty-to-our-boyfriends-and-mothers-but-daytime-soap-opera-dogs.”
American is fearfully obsessed with the mirror: As a nation, we have for decades melted, de-culturalized, homogenized and sterilized ourselves and the images of ourselves. If we were to strip away the beauty facade, I think we fear that we are truly only skin deep, that the mirror has more depth than what is reflected in it.
What makes Bates beautiful is her earnestness and directness, her open heart and a face like a jewel--multifacted and ever-changing. If that’s what the camera loves, why shouldn’t Hollywood?
Wake up, boys.
