California IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : Nurses Protest Cuts Planned at Hospital

Saying they already are understaffed and overworked, about two dozen Highland General Hospital nurses rallied against proposed cuts in nursing hours. The nurses charged that the hospital is trying to save money by cutting quality. Last week, hospital administrator Ophelia Long announced plans to cut nearly $2 million from the facility’s $113-million annual budget, with $1.3 million coming from the nursing budget. The rest will be trimmed from administration and nursing management, Long said.
