One man was killed and five people were injured in two separate car accidents early Sunday, including one in which a car careened into a street corner and struck two pedestrians.

Police said an Anaheim man was headed south on Harbor Boulevard at about 2:30 a.m. when his automobile ran a red light at Broadway and collided with a car driven by Debra J. Devine, also of Anaheim.

Both cars were propelled into the southwest corner of the intersection, where they struck light poles. A male pedestrian was knocked aside, while a woman was pinned between the front of one car and a raised planter box.

The Anaheim man, who drove the car that hit the pedestrians, died at the scene, but police were withholding his name pending notification of his relatives. Devine suffered cuts on her face and right knee.

The female pedestrian, who has not been identified by police, underwent surgery for a lacerated liver Sunday and was in critical condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

Police said she was recovering late Sunday and was expected to live; the male pedestrian, also unidentified, was listed in good condition.

In another accident at about 12:30 a.m., police said a pickup driven by Juan Manuel Villalva of Anaheim struck a car driven by Elva Naomi Martinez at Dale and Orange avenues.

Police said Martinez, also of Anaheim, and one of her four passengers, who was not identified, were hospitalized Sunday at UCI Medical Center and Western Medical Center-Santa Ana with major injuries.

Anaheim detectives said they are investigating to determine which driver failed to stop at the red light. They asked witnesses to call (714) 999-1861.
