NEWPORT BEACH : Chimney Height Increase Voted

The Planning Commission, charged with supervising orderly and responsible development in the city, has voted to increase maximum chimney heights “to allow a little architectural design and flexibility.â€

City Planning Director Jim Hewicker said chimneys now are required to be no taller than two feet above the point of a sloped roof that is 10 feet away.

Although it “preserves public view,†the restriction also stops property owners from putting decorations such as dog houses on their chimneys, Hewicker said.

So the commission voted to amend the city’s development and zoning planning code to allow an extra foot on top.

The measure now goes to City Council.
