PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Iemsisanith’s Three-Pointer Leads Anaheim
Say Iemsisanith made a three-point basket from the top of the key with one second remaining in overtime to give Anaheim High School a 62-61 victory over Savanna in an Orange League game Friday in Anaheim.
Anaheim’s Rudy Fernandez sent the game into overtime when he made two free throws with 47 seconds remaining to tie the score, 57-57. Fernandez gave Anaheim a 59-57 lead in overtime when he scored on a follow shot, but Savanna responded with two straight baskets to take a 61-59 lead. Jerome Lyche had given Savanna the two-point lead with a long jump shot with five seconds remaining.
Anaheim (9-8, 2-2) called a timeout and Greg Cole hit Iemsisanith with a long pass to set up the winning shot.
In other Orange League games:
Western 56, Magnolia 51--Nurishi Stevenson missed the front end of a one-and-one but got the rebound and scored to give Western a 53-50 lead with less than a minute left. Tom Barraza scored 17 points for Western (16-1, 4-0). Wayne Thomas scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds.
Valencia 72, Brea-Olinda 65--The score was tied, 47-47, after three quarters but Valencia (12-4, 2-2) outscored Brea-Olinda (7-11, 2-2), 25-18, as Justin Jiminez scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.
In the Academy League:
St. Michael’s Prep 92, Heritage Christian 71--Jon Grobler set a school record with 51 points for visiting St. Michael’s Prep. Grobler, a 5-foot-9 junior, broke the previous record of 36 set by his brother, Nick, two years ago. His previous high was 35 against Redlands Calvary Chapel this season. Jocques Wright added 18 for St. Michael’s Prep (4-11, 1-2).
Liberty Christian 78, Cal Lutheran 58--Justin Flagg scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter as Liberty Christian (7-8, 2-1) won at the Newport Community Center.
In the Century League:
Canyon 59, Santa Ana Valley 45--Abdi Barhordar scored 18 points for visiting Canyon (12-7, 3-2).
El Modena 59, Orange 55--Guard Bob Baytosh made a pair of three-point shots to open the game as El Modena (14-6, 5-0) opened a 19-7 lead in the first quarter.
Foothill 87, Villa Park 80--Center Nick Konopisos scored 28 points for host Foothill (10-9, 4-1).
In the Olympic League:
Brethren Christian 58, Ayala 35--Brandon Stott scored nine points for host Brethren Christian (14-3, 5-1 in league).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 84, Costa Mesa 59--Paul La Mott scored 30 points and Justin Lugo had 16 for host Laguna Hills (8-8, 2-2).
Laguna Beach 71, Century 66--Josh Borella scored 36 points for the host Artists (12-7, 3-1).
In the Sea View League:
Woodbridge 78, Saddleback 61--Guard Matt Murphy had 15 points on five three-pointers and Ryan Rauch had 20 points for host Woodbridge (13-7, 3-1).
Tustin 73, Newport Harbor 48--David Beilstein scored 25 points for host Tustin (17-2, 4-0). Justin McIntee scored 14 points for Newport Harbor (9-10, 1-3).
Corona del Mar 68, University 61--Jon Upham and Todd Kehrli each made two free throws in the final 30 seconds of play to give Corona del Mar (9-11, 2-2) the victory.
In a nonleague game:
St. Margaret’s 106, Bundy Canyon Christian 37--St. Margaret’s established school records for most points in a game and most points in a quarter (31) in a nonleague game. Center Ryan Westendorf had 23 points and 17 rebounds for St. Margaret’s (11-5).
