El Cajon
A 36-year-old man awaiting sentencing in the death of a 2-year-old girl, Friday tried to kill himself before a hearing at which he was to be sentenced, his attorney said.
Gary Stephen Griffith of El Cajon was taken to Grossmont Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit Friday morning, just hours before he was to be sentenced, attorney Tom Kelly said in court.
Griffith had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the May, 1989, death of his girlfriend’s daughter, Carla Nelson, and could be sentenced to a maximum of nine years in prison.
Kelly gave no more details about the suicide attempt, Griffith’s second since Nelson’s death. Sentencing was delayed until Jan. 23.
