Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

“Dick Tracy†finally lived up to its blockbuster status and took over the top spot of the Billboard magazine rental chart. But it took three weeks to get to No. 1--a long time for such a ballyhooed movie--which may indicate its reign will be short. “RoboCop 2,†which jumped from No. 8 to No. 2, is hot on the heels of “Tracy.†“My Blue Heaven,†the comedy starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, is doing decent rental business so far, climbing from No. 20 to No. 11. The opening of “The Godfather III†spurred enough interest in the first two that they’ve made the rental chart--the original at No. 30 and “II†at No. 39.

* Controversial comic Andrew Dice Clay was bragging that he would cruise into movie stardom in “Ford Fairlane,†but this vehicle ran out of gas. Despite a trashing by critics, though, it did $21 million at the box office, but not nearly what Clay expected. It debuted at No. 16 on the rental chart but isn’t expected to be a major hit.
