S.F. Declared War Sanctuary by Supervisors

SAN FRANCISCO — The Board of Supervisors has declared this city a sanctuary for anyone who elects not to participate in a U.S. war with Iraq.
The resolution, approved on a 9-0 vote with no debate, declares the city “a sanctuary for all people who for moral, ethical or religious reasons cannot participate in war.”
The statement has no effect on federal laws, but it prohibits the city, including police, from spending money to assist the government in any effort to track down or prosecute soldiers who are absent without leave or draft dodgers.
The resolution makes San Francisco the second city, after Madison, Wis., to adopt such a policy.
