Army Calls Up More Reserve Medic Units

The Pentagon announced Tuesday that the Army has ordered to active duty 3,609 reserve members and the Marine Corps has summoned 802 as part of the Persian Gulf deployment.

The call-up raises the total of reserve personnel activated as part of Operation Desert Shield to 151,711. Not all of those have been sent to the Persian Gulf, however, said Maj. Doug Hart, a Pentagon spokesman.

The Army call-up involves 18 medical units. Some recent reports from the Persian Gulf have quoted doctors there as complaining about outdated equipment in their units, and have raised questions about the ability of medical units to handle casualties if fighting breaks out.
