German Drug Firms OK Subsidies: Faced with the anguish of those unable to get medicines, drug firms in western Germany agreed to pay hefty subsidies to discount drugs sold in former East Germany. Labor Minister Norbert Bluem said the drug industry will pay $1.5 billon through 1993 so that low-paid people in the once-communist part of the country can buy medicines at a 55% discount. When the two Germanys agreed to unite last year, their treaty specified the temporary drug discount to ease the East Germans’ transition to western prices and market conditions.
