The magic of playing at home paid off again for Cal State Northridge as the Matadors defeated Canisius, 69-64, Wednesday night.
With 47 seconds left, freshman Andre Chevalier hit a wide-open Todd Bowser underneath the basket and he scored for a 64-60 advantage.
Center Ed Book answered with a basket for the Golden Griffins (5-4), but Chevalier swished two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to maintain the four-point advantage.
Canisius’ Brendan McCaffrey missed a three-point attempt, and with 20 seconds left Kyle Kerlegan made a free throw to seal it for the Matadors, 3-8 but 3-0 at home.
Chevalier finished with 14 points. Kerlegan scored 11 points despite a cumbersome mask designed to protect his broken nose. Shelton Boykin led Northridge with 13 rebounds.
