OLONGAPO, Philippines — At least three U.S. sailors--one of them from a ship out of San Diego--died early today in a fire that swept through a hotel filled with American servicemen en route to the Persian Gulf, police said.
The fire at the Royal Lodge Hotel, about one mile from the U.S.-operated Subic Bay Naval Base, also killed a Filipino woman.
Investigators said one of the victims was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, which is part of a convoy that arrived in the Philippines on Thursday from San Diego on its way to the gulf. The other two victims were also believed assigned to the task force.
The U.S. Navy withheld the names of those killed pending notification of relatives.
Police said the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
